Weingut Franz Pichler

Details

1982 Franz Pichler founded his vineyard on some very small terraces. In the meantime he counts seven hectares his own on which he co-operates with his son Franz junior. The two of them produce wines in all the categories, and their terraces range from St. Michael to Joching, encompassing an impressive spectrum of different soil structures, aspects, micro-climates and grape-varieties. They consider it both an obligation and a challenge to expose the nuances and specificities of their terraces. Indeed, this is not an easy task – the terraces on the Kollmitz, for example, are located at different heights: on the upper parts, primary rock dominates, while loess prevails on the lower terraces. The Gaisberg, in contrast, is defined by a cooler climate, and the Harzenleithen opens out into numerous directions. When one understands all these conditions, however, and when one engages carefully with them, like Franz Pichler, it is possible to produce a range of wines that beautifully reflects the complexities of the Wachau, perfectly connecting typical grape notes – be they Riesling, Veltliner, Muskateller, Pinot Blanc or Chardonnay notes – with the specificities of the terroir.
