California

Details

California, the most significant wine region in the USA, stretches over 800 kilometers along the Pacific coast and produces about 85% of American wine. The region encompasses approximately 242,000 hectares of vineyards and is divided into over 140 AVAs (American Viticultural Areas). California's diverse geographical and climatic conditions, from cool coastal areas to hot inland valleys, allow for the cultivation of a wide range of grape varieties. The most important include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Napa Valley is renowned for its outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, characterized by intense aromas of black currants, cedarwood, and complex structure. Sonoma County offers impressive variety, from elegant Pinot Noir from the cool Russian River Valley to robust Zinfandels from Dry Creek Valley. The Central Coast, extending from Monterey to Santa Barbara, benefits from cool Pacific winds and produces excellent Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs with refreshing acidity and complex fruit notes. Other significant AVAs include Mendocino County, known for its sustainable farming practices, Paso Robles with its powerful Rhône blends, Lodi with its old Zinfandel vines, and the Santa Cruz Mountains, which produce elegant, mineral wines.
