Bodegas Nekeas

Details

In 1990, eight families from the small village of Añorbe decided to take up the old winemaking tradition again and founded Bodegas Nekeas. Nekeas is Basque and means "the valley that is difficult to cultivate". The winery is located in the Valdizarbe valley in the very north of the province of Navarre, where temperatures are significantly lower and rainfall is greater than 100 km further south. The 225 hectares of Bodegas Nekeas have sandy and clay soils and are planted with the red grape varieties Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Garnacha Tinto as well as with the white Chardonnay and Viura. The respective vine clones were very carefully selected with regard to the conditions of the valley and planted according to the demands of the varieties. Despite the young age of the vines, the talented oenologist Concha Vecino was able to vinify sensational wines with high extract values. Bodegas Nekeas has been awarded several times by Robert Parker's "The Wine Advocate" for its excellent price-quality ratio: "The best bargains I have tasted in many years."
