This Haut-Medoc estate (first mentioned in writing in 1147) was not included in the first attempt of the Bordeaux classification of 1855 on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition, but the tireless work of the owner Caroline de Villeneuve-Durfort (family property from 1579 to the end of the 19th century) then led to the subsequent designation as the fifth Cru already in the fall.
Except for Mouton Rothschild and Cantemerle , no chateau has managed to change this classification to date. Chateau Cantemerle is located directly opposite La Lagune and is quite large with 91 hectares of vineyards. In 1981, an insurance company took over the chateau, which was on the verge of ruin. The vineyard, which at the time had only 20 hectares in production, was expanded again to the original 90 hectares through plantings. Large investments in the vineyard and cellar led Chateau Cantemerle to today's quality standard.
The park is probably one of the largest and most beautiful in the whole of the Bordelais.
