Château Lafite Rothschild was one of the legendary first four Premier Grand Cru Classés in 1855, which shaped the world fame of Bordeaux wines and still does. Château Lafite Rothschild has about 178 hectares of land, of which, however, only a little over 100 hectares are planted with wine. The Château even owns just under 5 hectares in Saint-Estèphe.
On these grow the Bordeaux typical grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The best soil conditions with deep gravel mixed with drifting sand on a well-drained limestone subsoil offer excellent conditions to grow great vines. Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, develops excellently here.
Already since the first generation Rothschilds, who took over the estate in 1868, this ecosystem thrives. To preserve this precious heritage, Château Lafite Rothschild is in transition to certified organic farming. A not insignificant part of the best plots is already cultivated biodynamically. Permanent plantings have also been introduced in the meantime. The average age of the vines is over 40 years, the oldest vines are over 140 years old and escaped the phylloxera plague. Wine from vines younger than 10 years is used in the second wine Carruades de Lafite.
