The Mitterberg IGT appellation is a protected geographical indication from South Tyrol. It was introduced to identify wines with regional character that do not fall under the stricter DOC regulations (such as South Tyrol DOC), yet still offer high quality. Unlike many DOCs, Mitterberg IGT allows for a wider range of grape varieties. The classification gives winemakers greater creative freedom in terms of style, maturation, and grape selection. This results in diverse, experimental, or modern wines. Mitterberg IGT is especially attractive to small wineries or innovative producers who work with international varieties or create non-traditional South Tyrolean cuvées. Despite its "lower" status compared to DOC, it often delivers outstanding quality thanks to South Tyrol’s favorable climate and winemaking expertise.
