Solaris is a PIWI (fungus-resistant) white grape variety that was bred in 1975 by Norbert Becker at the Freiburg Viticulture Institute. It is a cross between Merzling and the hybrid vine Gm 6493 (Severnyi × Muscat Ottonel).
Due to its resistance to downy mildew and high frost hardiness, this vigorous grape variety is particularly suitable for cooler and more humid wine regions. The name Solaris is derived from the Latin word "Sol" for "sun", reflecting this plant's ability to ripen early with the power of the sun, producing grapes with relatively high sugar content.
Today, Solaris is one of the most popular white PIWI grape varieties in German-speaking Central Europe and is also gaining popularity in new growing areas such as Belgium, Denmark, and others. The grapes are medium-sized, golden-brown, and loosely clustered. The wines produced from them are wonderfully fruity and aromatic and can be made both dry and sweet.
