Die Nachfrage nach veganem Wein wächst und löst bei so manchen Verwunderung aus, was an Wein nicht vegan sein könnte. Die Grundzutat des Weins – Trauben bzw. Traubensaft – ist zweifelsohne pflanzlich, doch im Herstellungsprozess werden meist tierische Stoffe eingesetzt. Als Schönungsmittel werden alle Stoffe bezeichnet, die zur Klärung und Stabilisierung des Weines eingesetzt werden. Diese sind meist tierischen Ursprungs, eine Schönung mit rein pflanzlichen Stoffen ist jedoch genauso gut möglich. Bei Schönungsmitteln handelt es sich um Hilfsstoffe, also Stoffe, die nach deren Funktionserfüllung wieder entfernt werden und so nicht im Endprodukt enthalten sind. Diese tierischen Mittel können Gelatine, Albumin, Hausenblase oder Kasein sein. Die Herstellung von veganem Wein ist nicht aufwendiger, nur die Umstellung und das Testen pflanzlicher Schönungsmittel erfordert etwas Zeit. Die Verwendung von tierischen Mitteln ist kein Qualitätszeichen – ganz im Gegenteil: Immer mehr Top-Winzerinnen und Winzer steigen auf die Verwendung rein pflanzlicher Stoffe um, welche Bentonit, Aktivkohle, Kieselsäure oder Erbsenprotein sein können. Das V-Label ist eine eingetragene, geschützte Marke der European Vegetarian Union zur Kennzeichnung von vegetarischen und veganen Lebensmitteln, an welchem man erkennen kann, dass dieser Wein vegan ist.
